Tarmonbarry Half Marathon

12/10 - Tarmonbarry Half Marathon @ 2:06:46
Another stunning half marathon done. This was some good easy mileage in my taper for Dublin in roughly 2 weeks. Next weekend will be an easy 10K. Termonbarry is a little town along the N5 just a few miles from Longford. Lovely little place, with beautiful countryside views along the mostly flat route. The race starts out along a long and rather lonely stretch - the heavy fog that made the drive in so treacherous was somewhat of a blessing along that stretch of road: you had no idea what lay ahead of you and had to focus on your immediate surrounds. With a tiny field of runners (I'd estimate barely over 100), it was somehow never lonely. Even though I started at the very back, and was stone last for the first mile or so, there was always someone just ahead. Along that first stretch of road, it is a gentle but definite climb, no enough to really notice it, you'd notice that you're a little tired at a pace that's usually relaxed and easy. lt's the next hill that you need to be wary of: steep but deceptively short, it actually continues with a gentler gradient for quite a ways beyond where you thought the top to be. This caught a number of people, but my slow-and-steady strategy won out in the end and I bested that hill with a smile! Finished with my fastest half marathon in 4 years, and I really was taking it easy. Until the last 2 miles anyway. I simply can't resist gunning for the finish line if I'm feeling as strong as today :-)

The cold weather that l was cursing all morning also turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The heat saps your energy, even if it may not be noticeable, but I've come to realise that l run faster at the same effort levels in cooler weather ov.er warm. Not outright cold, mind you, but definitely on the cooler side.

Tarmonbarry Half is a lovely taper run for Dublin that should fit nicely into most people's training schedules. I can definitely recommend this one for 2015. The post-race spread they put on is lovely too.

07/10 - Dublin Night Run 10K @ 1:00:33 (www.redtagtiming.com/results/DublinNightRun_ParkWest2014_10km.pdf)

I took part in the very first Dublin Night Run at Park West on Tuesday night. Dark and cool, the course was surprisingly fast and flat, and not too busy. I started slow and easy for first-half split of 0:31:45, but got a little caught up in the second half and ran much faster than I'd planned on: 0:28:48 for the second 5K split. Organised by the same guys who do the Wicklow, Wexford and Clontarf half marathons, this event was very well organised, with plenty of parking, well sign-posted, great vibe. They were running low on water when I passed the water station just at the start of the second lap, but being a cooler evening this wasn't too critical. I think they under-estimated the numbers a little. Still, I'd gladly run this one again - the course was mostly along the canal with a little along the road and through the business park.

If the weather holds out I'll be at training tonight at Shanganagh, but I won't make the later celebrations: it's been 2 solid weeks of very early mornings and very late nights (busy period at work right now), so I'll be heading home after training to have an early night. More racing ahead this weekend: Tarmonbarry Half on Sunday. I'll use it as a training run and the start of my taper for Dublin: 31km last weekend at Athlone, 21 this weekend, and I have a 10km race in Punchestown next weekend. Dublin is the following weekend on the Bank Holiday Monday.

Moone Kilomarathon

27/09 - Moone Kilomarathon 26.2km @ 2:40: 07
What started out a cold, overcast morning, soon became a beautiful hot day. Scenic route out in the Kildare countryside, with some gentle rolling hills to add a bit of challenge to the course. The finish was tough, a nice long hill, but there was plenty of cheering from spectators and runners already finished, to give that final bit of motivation needed to dig deep for one final burst of energy. The organisers were brilliant with all the extra water stations along the route to compensate for the unseasonably hot weather of late. Great fun, I can recommend this race to anyone wanting to step beyond half marathon distance, or looking for a longer run to prep for Dublin Marathon next year. Angela Ross Innes.

Samsung Night Race.

.I ran the Samsung Nightrun last Sunday in Dublin. My time was 49m31s. Very cramped race with some delays in first couple of KMs, which slowed everyone down. Very overpriced race at €31 for a poor goodybag and only water at end of race. Paul

Craanford 5mile

Sunday 6th April saw the first running of the Craanford 5 mile road race. Craanford Harriers is a new club, catering for juvenile athletes and is situated 5k south of Gorey. They had a couple of juvenile races prior to the 5mile race. Unfortunately the weather was unkind, with a very strong wind (seemed to be always in your face apart from the final mile) and heavy rain, although the rain did clear as the race progressed. The course is a very tough one, with an uphill first mile and miles 2 and 3 over hilly country lanes, which were not helped by the heavy rain that had fallen earlier. The final 2 miles were better running roads, still hilly though, but at least most of the last mile was downhill. The organisation and stewarding was excellent. Cash prizes for 1st 3 male and female finishers and also for each category winner. Plenty of spot prizes also on offer. The catering afterwards was great, with a selection of cakes that any French Boulangerie would be proud of. Not a race for those looking for Pb's, but a good tough run well organised and after which you will be very well fed. Great value for 15 euro entry fee.

Gaelforce Bray 10k

I took part in the Gaelforce Bray 10K Cliff run as did Marc Kierens. (Not sure if there were any others). Probably the best fun race I have participated in from the dart trip down and the great run back to Bray. Stunning views although you did have to watch your footing! A very friendly group of people running in it and great support at the Bray end, especially along the tough and energy sapping run along Bray Beach. A challenging run but one well worth doing.
Delighted with a time of 50.02 and 9th lady home!  Charlotte Stevens.
