Huge congratulations to James Foot who last Friday evening won the 3km Tara Road race.  James put in an incredible performance breaking away from the pack at 2km to win in a brilliant time of 10.05, beating competition a lot older than him.

Shanganagh Park Masterplan

As most of you are probably aware a draft Masterplan for the development of Shanganagh Park was issued on 1st July 2019. The closing date for observations on this Masterplan is 15th September 2019.  As part of this draft Masterplan a provision has been made for a 100m 4 lane sprint track and the ‘potential’ for long jump and triple jump pits.  While we are generally supportive of the Masterplan we are concerned that in comparison to some of the other sports catered for in the park that ours is still being "left behind".

As you are all aware in the winter months, the juvenile section of the club train in Woodbrook College with limited facilities and at a significant financial outlay, or on the surrounding roads. While in the summer months they train at Shanganagh park again with no formal facilities. Young athletes from our club have won Provincial and National medals in a wide area of the sport including long jump, high jump, middle distance and relays.  If they can do this without any formal training facilities imagine what their potential could be with somewhere specific to train.  Providing a safe environment for our young athletes is paramount.

We feel that based on this growth the need is warranted for a track and the provision of lighting for the Winter months.  We plan to outline this in a submission to DLRCoCo in conjunction with other local community groups.

We are asking you for your help.  We would greatly appreciate if you could take the time to ‘Give your view’ on the online survey which can be found here:

This is a very short survey (4 questions) looking for your views on the draft Masterplan (also at the above link).  If you or any other members of your family use Shanganagh park to run in please ask them to complete this survey.

Training

Training will continue each Tuesday from 6.50-8pm for all athletes, meeting by the astro pitch in Shanganagh park.

NO THURSDAY TRAINING THIS WEEK DUE TO THE CLUB 5 km & 3 km H/CAP CHAMPIONSHIP.  For those taking part we will meet at the main gate of Shanganagh park at 6.45pm for a warm-up before the event begins at 7.10pm.

This weeks Sunday run with Inbhear Dee will be in Brittas Bay, meeting at Brittas Bay beach North at 9.20am for a 9.30 start.  It is going to be a fun-run followed by a swim and picnic.  It would be great to see as many of our athletes turn out as possible. This is open to anyone running U12's and up.  There will be a 30 minute run for the younger athletes and a 45 min run for the older athletes (with a warm-up and warm down).   Lifts are available for those requiring one, please speak to Suzanne or Emma.

As the cross country season is rapidly approaching it is important for all athletes to take part in at least one of the weekly Thursday or Sunday runs in addition to the Tuesday training.

For our younger athletes we would encourage you to take part in the junior parkrun (2km) held at 9.30am each Sunday morning in the Peoples Park in Bray.

Some results missed from last week were Aaron Egan winning a silver medal in the U10 boys 80m at the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol sports day, well done Aaron

Apologies but I also missed that the boys U11 team of Aaron and Ryan Egan and Samuel and Oisin Whelan won a silver medal at the Wicklow Team Event on Wednesday June 19th, apologies boys, great result.

It has also been brought to my attention that at a joint Hell and Back and school fundraiser for St. Cronans boys National School -Aaron and Ryan Egan were the first 2 to finish the 3.5km course ahead of over 750 participants!!! WOW AMAZING BOYS!!

Breaking News

Ferdia O’Sullivan jumped a new PB of 1.35m at the All Irelands on Saturday 20th June, well done Ferdia, a great result.

Thank You

Finally a massive thank you from all involved with Bray Runners to everyone who helped out on Tuesday night at our invitational event.  I think the whole thing went very well, we’ve received very positive feedback since.

A huge word of thanks has to go to Norbert for processing the results so efficiently. That's not to take away from every one of our other officials who did a fantastic job and made the whole thing run smoothly. Thank you to all who volunteered.

Well done to the athletes!

If Tuesday's invitational was a success from an organisational point of view, it was even more impressive from an athletics standpoint. Bray Runners A.C. has never won the invitational in the event's 23 year history, however we came very close on Tuesday.

We ultimately lost out to Greystones A.C. by just 19 points, so we should all be very proud of all our athletes who competed and did their part, whether those members made it through improving over time or those who have more recently joined us.

Have a look at the fantastic attachment that Norbert put together with all the facts and individual scores for Bray Runners, it makes very interesting reading.

SUMMER HOLIDAYS:  WE WILL BE TAKING A SUMMER BREAK AFTER THE INVITATIONAL UNTIL TUESDAY 6TH AUGUST

Appeal for parental assistance:  We currently have 95 registered juveniles with the club and in order to maintain the smooth running of our training sessions we really could do with some more help.  You do NOT have to be a runner, all you have to do is provide encouragement and support to our young athletes.  Please feel free to speak to any of our coaches now or when we return in August re. helping out.

Finally, as this will be the last update until August I would like to say a huge word of thanks to all you parents who support and encourage your young athletes at numerous events throughout not only the county but the country.  Without you bringing your kids to these events our club would not be in the strong position it is in today.

25.06.2019

A big congrats to Fionn Begley and Hannah Kelly who in the recently held ‘Hell and Back’ at Kilruddery saw both Bray Runners athletes finish top of their respective categories.  Well done guys on doing so well in a very tough event.

Last Wednesday the track at Greystones held the annual Wicklow Allianz Cumann na mBunscol sports day where 3 Bray Runners athletes represented their schools.  Ferdia O’Sullivan finished 3rd in the U12 boys 100m, Bobby More finished 3rd in the U12 boys 600m.  Both boys went on to represent their school in the relay finishing 3rd.  Rian Anafi-Fitzgibbon finished 2nd in the boys O12 600m and Rian went on to be part of the winning relay team with his school.  Well done boys, great results.

A busy day at the track saw the running of the Wicklow Team Event on Wednesday evening, an event which used to be a regular on the County Wicklow track and field programme but which has not been held for a number of years.  After a bit of a hectic start we finally organised teams.  Bobby More, Ferdia O’Sullivan and Tom Hickie were part of the silver medal winning U13 boys team and Kate Hanly, Kripa Kissanthomas, Catherine O’Neill and Anna Salaverria formed the bronze medal winning U13 girls team.  A big well done to all of the other Bray Runners athletes who joined up with athletes from other clubs in order to form teams, some of you competing well above your age group.

Upcoming Events

TONIGHT: Tuesday June 25th Bray Runners Invitational takes place from 6:30pm at the Track at Greystones. This event has been a staple of the summer athletics calendar in County Wicklow over the past few decades and we would LOVE to see as many of our athletes as possible take part.  This is a club event in that athletes earn points for their clubs so the more Bray Runners athletes there the more points we can earn.  Please see the attached programme of events.  It is an uneven age event i.e. U9, U11, U13 and U15 so those in even ages can move up a year e.g. U12s compete U13s etc.

Saturday June 29th U12/U13 All Irelands: This Saturday Ferdia O’Sullivan will represent the club in the U13 Boy High Jump at Tullamore, the very best of luck Ferdia.

July 13th & 14th Irish Life Health Juvenile All Irelands: Grainne O’Sullivan will represent the club in the U16 Girls Long Jump and 200m at Tullamore.  Good luck Grainne.

17.06.2019

It was another busy weekend for some of our athletes with the Leinster Juvenile Championships taking place this past weekend in Tullamore.  On Saturday we had Charlie, Aoife, Grainne and Órla representing our club.  All competed admirably and although some were disappointed with their performances they should be extremely proud of themselves.  Competing for Leinster is probably the hardest province to medal in.  Charlie reached the final of the U14 long jump finishing 8th and both Grainne and Aoife reached the final of the U16 200m finishing 4th and 8th respectively, Grainne now goes on to compete in the 200m in the Nationals.  Órla finished 6th in the U17 800m.  Charlie also competed in the hurdles and Aoife in the high jump.

Sunday saw Matthew, Grainne and Eleanor represent our club.  Matthew finished 14th in the U14 800m final.  Eleanor qualified for the U15 800m final but due to illness was unable to compete in it.

The performance of the weekend has to belong to Grainne who jumped a huge new personal best in the U16 long jump of 5.34m to WIN.  A huge congratulations from all of us.  This is an athlete who has competed for many years and goes to show that eventually hard work can pay off, a very well deserved win.  Needless to say Grainne will represent the club in the Nationals at this event.
