Runner Profile: Dermot Brennan

To some of our new members he may just be the man on the bike on thursday nights, but the fact is that Dermot Brennan has been to the fore in Bray Runners for the past 25 years, as an athlete and an administrator. Back in 1987 after competing in the Dublin Marathon, in a time of 3hrs 59mins,  Dermot joined the club. He later ran the Millenium marathon in a time of 3hrs 23.

Here are some of his PBs since reaching the age of 40,

10mile,   59.54

10k,       35.47

5mile,    27.50

5k,         17.18

Some excellent times, I am sure you would agree.

During his running career he also won a number of Wicklow T/F C/ship medals, including, 1500m Masters Gold, 1500m Senior Silver and a Shot Putt gold medal. As well as various team medals in the Wicklow C/C C/ships, he is very proud of his Intermediate C/C Silver medal.

The races Dermot enjoyed most are the Raheny5 and the Nass 10k, although the one race he remembers most is a Parnell A.C 10k when he became very ill due to severe dehydration, a lesson learned.

On the administration side, he has served as Chairperson for 11 years and Hon. Secretary for 2 years. He has coached and co-ordinated our juvenile section since its inception until recently. Dermot is presently Hon. Sec. of Wicklow Athletics and Child Welfare officer with our umbrella club, Sli Cualann. He also holds numerous coaching qualifications as well as Child Ethics and Child Welfare  qualifications.

Currently he enjoys his Thursday night group where he organises mostly new members and those returning from injury. He is gennerally the first person new members will have contact with.

Dermots most enjoyable memory of B.R. is seeing how the club has flourished over the years with the influx of new members and the commitment of our long term members.

Over the past couple of years Dermot has been plaqued by injuries, which have brought his running career to a tempory halt, but he is now an active member of Bray Wheelers.
